From the National FrontKristina M. Smith engages in education trainingBy Cathy Boyd
Kristina M. Smith, of Good Shepherd, Lexington, is taking part in a unique training program at the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest. Smith’s participation will earn her a Certificate in Youth Ministry and Christian Education. The certificate programs afford the minister an opportunity for education in the theological foundation for ministry among children, youth and adults. ETSS offers basic, associate and advanced certificate courses, which are designed as a healthy and theologically sound alternative to typical methods of training for Christian educators. Study and prayer are both integral to the program that has drawn youth ministers and Christian educators from many dioceses across the country. When Molly Bennett first became involved in Christian education, she says, “I was handed the keys to the craft closet and told, ‘See you in the spring.’” Now the Certificate Programs Director at ETSS, Bennett is committed to giving Christian educators the skills, theological education and encouragement they need. “Our program is not so much intended to teach folks how to be youth ministers, but to give them the theological underpinnings for the ministry.” An additional side-benefit is that participants develop a community of professional peers around the country. “I see this program as a step in the Christian educator’s faith journey,” says Bennett. “It’s as much formation as information.” The next one-week first session will take place in the last week of June; Smith is scheduled to return to ETSS for continued work. For additional information check the program’s Web site: www.etss.edu/youthdre.shtml or contact Bennett at 512-472-4133, ext. 340, or mbennett@etss.edu. |
