Can You Catch the Spirit Off the Beaten Path?

By Katie Sigmon

In July of this year, 1,500 people from North and Latin America will come to the Diocese of Lexington to see if they can catch the “Spirit.” July 26- 31, Berea College in Berea, Ky., will host the next Episcopal Youth Event (EYE). The youth who come will have a week filled with worship, fellowship, Appalachian culture, and hopefully lots of fun. The Design Team, which includes three members from the Diocese of Lexington, has been months into planning for the event.

As a member of the Design Team, I can say that we are all very excited about the event but we know the work that still needs to be accomplished. Since the Diocese of Lexington is the host to the 1,500 people coming, there is also work that needs to be done on a Diocesan level. Airport greeters, campus greeters, a mid-week cleaning crew, trucks, and snacks throughout the week are all needed from the members of our Diocese. These things are all needed to make sure that the week goes as smoothly as possible for all of the youth and adult sponsors.

This event is important not only to the youth, but hopefully to the Diocese of Lexington. For a week, the National Church will be focusing on the hospitality and friendliness of the Diocese of Lexington. It will be our time to show people from around the world just how wonderful we are as a Diocese. I ask you to please help us in this mission, in whatever way you feel you can. If you feel you want to help in ANY way please don’t hesitate to call one of the members of the Design Team from Lexington or Cindy Sigmon, the Interim Diocesan Youth Director, at (606) 464-8254; csigmon@diolex.org.

PURPOSE:
A celebration to inspire our deeper faith in Jesus Christ and a renewed commitment to mission and ministry. At E.Y.E. we will celebrate a community that God has brought together. E.Y.E. is a ministry development event. If each participant has a renewed sense of their Christian ministry through their experience at E.Y.E., we will have been successful.

WHEN:
2:00 p.m. July 26, - 1:00 p.m. July 31, 2005. All participants must be resident for the entire conference.

WHO:
Young people who have completed grades 9, 10, 11, or 12 by Spring 2005 and have not already attended college. (Persons not in school but who are within the age range of high school students should contact the Youth Ministries Office). All young people must attend E.Y.E. with an adult diocesan sponsor. The ratio of young people to adults for diocesan groups is the following: 3-10 youth = 2 adult sponsors; 11-15 youth = 3 adult sponsors; 16- 20 youth = 3 or 4 adult sponsors; 21-25 youth = 4 or 5 adult sponsors; 26-30 youth = 5 or 6 adult sponsors. Dioceses planning to register fewer than three youth should contact the Youth Ministries Office. In all cases, the majority of diocesan delegations should be youth. Dioceses who bring male and female participants must bring one male and one female adult sponsor. E.Y.E. is a closed event. Only registered individuals may attend, and participate in E.Y.E. Each diocese is initially allocated 15 slots - 12 young people and 3 adult sponsors. After the first round of registration, dioceses that have recruited a balanced and diverse group of young people and adults to attend the event will be able to register additional participants according to the same guidelines, as long as space allows.

WHERE:
E.Y.E. will be held on the campus of Berea College in Berea, Kentucky. Each group is responsible for its own travel arrangements.

COST:
The cost of E.Y.E is $300 per person, excluding travel. Included in this fee are room and board, program costs, ground transportation, and the event t-shirt. These fees cover only a portion of the total cost of E.Y.E. The cost for each participant is subsidized through the budget of the Youth Ministries Office.

SCHOLARSHIP ASSISTANCE:
All participants needing financial assistance to attend E.Y.E. are expected to explore their personal, congregational, diocesan, as well as other resources. Limited funds are available through provincial youth ministries networks for those who have exhausted local resources. Contact your provincial youth ministry coordinator for more information.
