Part of the Heart
of Our Mission:

Bishop Sauls is pictured with the large group confirmed
and baptized at his annual visitation at St. Michael's, Lexington.
School for Deacons Now Accepting Applications
The long awaited School For Deacons has been written and
approved for the Diocese of Lexington. Deacons Mary Kilbourn-Huey, Lois
Howard, Ginny Eklund, Margaret Shanks, and Donna Barr have been hard at
work for the last year researching and planning for the school. This curriculum
of study and practicum has been highly endorsed by The Commission On Ministry
and Bishop Sauls.
The Deacon’s call is to be both servant of “the poor, the
sick, the suffering, and the helpless,” and herald of the Word.
The Deacon proclaims the Gospel by:
Serving the needs of the poor, the weak,
the sick, and the lonely, interpreting these needs to
the church and enabling the church to minister.
God calls all of us on many levels: God calls creation,
calls the Church, calls our congregations, and calls me, to reach me where
I am now. And at specific times and places, God calls me to particular
actions. Discernment comes from the Latin word discernere, which means
“to separate,” “to distinguish,” to “determine,”
“to sort out.”
We, the Deacons of the Diocese, are hopeful and would encourage
all those whose lives and ministries are distinctively Diaconal, to consider
a conversation with one of us. Applications, syllabus, and requirements
will be sent to you after your inquiry. Classes begin February 17, 2006.
Deadline for applying is Oct. 1.
“Find a place in your heart,” implores Theophan
the Recluse, “and speak there with the Lord. It is the Lord’s
reception room.”
