Diocese of Lexington: Convention 2006

Alaskan Bishop and Gwich'in Elder, Environmental Art and the Business of the Diocese, February 23-25

Plans for the 2006 Convention of the Diocese of Lexington – “To teach, to love the environment”— are in high gear, as the Northern Kentucky Convention Committee prepares to welcome deputies to Trinity Church, Covington, for the Opening Eucharist on Thursday evening (see schedule on Pg. 6) and to the Radisson Riverview for the business of convention. Honored guests will be keynoter Mark MacDonald, Bishop of Alaska, and the Rev. Trimble Gilbert, Gwich’in Elder and Episcopal Priest. Trimble, 70, is a famous Athabaskan Fiddle Player. He is at the Arctic Village, the place that would be most impacted by development in the Refuge. He is presently visiting evangelical colleges in the States for an Evangelical Environmental organization.

The Convention Committee has issued a call for art related to honoring the environment and nature. Artists of every age, children through adults, are invited and encouraged to create art in any medium to be displayed at the convention. A thread throughout convention will be “A Song of Creation- Benedicite, omnia opera Domini.” The committee suggests that verses 1 -20 are particularly relevant to the environmental theme and could be a starting point for artistic creation.

Where do I sit at convention? How will I find my seat?

Those wearing deputy name tags — the official voting deputies and clergy representing each congregation — will be at assigned parish tables on the convention floor. Those wearing alternate deputy name tags will be seated at special tables near the convention floor, as will pages, diocesan staff, media, retired clergy, and persons who have registered for meals. There will be a gallery section for other visitors. Ushers Roxanne Ruggles and Holly Davis will assist participants in finding their assigned seating area.

How will I get to know the nominees for diocesan offices?

A photo spread of the nominees from both the January and February issues of The Advocate should have been received by all communicants of the Diocese, and will also be available at convention. A printout of biographical information is included in convention packets. Each nominee will have a ribbon attached to his/her nametag. The nominees will be introduced to the convention, and will also be available for conversation at the hospitality hour on Friday at 6 p.m.

What resolutions will be considered?

Resolutions which were received in the Diocesan office by the Feb. 3 deadline are as follows:

•R-1 Concerning Global Reconciliation and giving for international and local development towards supporting the Millennium Development Goals

•R-2 Concerning Establishment of minimum clergy compensation guidelines

•R-3 Concerning the date of the 111th and following conventions of the Diocese of Lexington

•R-4 Concerning the Rules of Order of Convention

•R-5 Concerning the affirmation and commending for study and action the achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals

If I missed the resolution deadline for the convention packet mailing, what do I do? Can resolutions still be brought before convention?

In accordance with the resolution passed at the 2005 convention, resolutions may be introduced during Convention, but may be acted upon only if introduced in the first business session of the Convention, the question before the Convention that of whether or not the resolution shall be considered. Upon affirmative vote of two thirds of the delegates, the resolutions will be referred to an appropriate Convention Committee for study and report to that Convention. Resolutions that fail to receive the required vote, as well as resolutions presented after the close of the first business session of the Convention will not be considered.

How do I get something put on the tables in the convention meeting room?

All materials placed on the tables at the Diocesan Convention must be approved by the secretary before being distributed by the pages, or placed on the tables. Prior permission may be requested from the Diocesan Office. Three hundred copies must be provided.

Can nominations for diocesan offices be made from the floor?

Yes. The nominating committee is appointed at the conclusion of each convention, and works throughout the year soliciting nominations. All pre-filed nominations were published with photos in the January and February issues of The Advocate. Complete biographical information is available in the pre-convention packet. To nominate from the floor, the nominator must have the nominee’s permission, complete a nomination form and submit it to the secretary of convention, and provide 300 copies of biographical information to be distributed. Questions about nominations should be addressed to Dale Chapman, Nominations Chair, at 859-252-1744 or dchapman@goodshepherdlex.org

What if a congregation requires a status change of deputy or alternate during convention?

In order for a congregation to change the status of a Deputy or Alternate during the Convention, the rector, vicar or priest in charge must submit changes in writing to the secretary. Alternates who are to serve as deputies must receive their deputy nametag to move to their congregation’s table on the convention floor and receive voting privileges. A deputy changing to alternate would be seated at the alternate tables outside the main floor. Ballots will only be issued to those individuals who are qualified to vote. (Canonically resident clergy, retired clergy of the Diocese of Lexington and elected deputies as reported and registered.)

Where can I read the Convention Journal reports?

Reports of diocesan departments and commission are posted on the Diocesan Web site (www.diolex.org) with all resolutions that have been submitted to the convention to date.
