The Episcopal Church in Eastern Kentucky

Each year, deputies to Diocesan Convention are asked to fill out a Post-Meeting-Response sheet, which gives people a chance to reflect on what they have experienced as the community of the Diocese of Lexington gathers. It is truly helpful to the Bishop, Diocesan staff and all those who are part of the planning of each convention to get this kind of feedback.
This year’s Post Meeting Responses or PMR’s had 9 categories that were rated. 91 PMR’s were returned. [Read more...]

“Making all things new”, the theme of the 116th annual convention of the Diocese of Lexington, celebrated new beginnings: 11 new clergy in the diocese since the previous convention; St. Paul’s, Newport received with parish status; new members of diocesan bodies elected and a new resolution for structure to offer the wider church. Creative energy and passion for mission and ministry mark a Diocese brimming with hope, humor and forward thinking.

Whereas the mission of the Episcopal Church is to seek and serve Christ in all persons and
Whereas, this Church’s faithful engagement in Christ’s mission is to proclaim good news to the poor, release to the captives, recovery of sight to the blind, freedom to the oppressed and the acceptable years of the Lord in a way that maximizes the resources available for that mission at all levels of the Church, and
Whereas, the administrative and governance structures of The Episcopal Church have grown over the years so that they now comprise approximately 47% of the church-wide budget resulting in a situation that hinders rather than furthers this Church’s engagement in God’s mission,
Be it resolved that this 116th Convention of the Diocese of Lexington directs that the following resolution be filed with the Secretary of the General Convention for consideration by the 77th General Convention of The Episcopal Church:
Resolved that a Special Commission on Mission Structure and Strategy be created, the composition of which shall include the chairs of the Standing Committee for Structure of the Church, two persons appointed by the Presiding Bishop, two persons appointed by the President of the House of Deputies, and one lay and one clergy person appointed by each province of The Episcopal Church, keeping in mind that the representation of this Special Commission express the diversity of persons that make up the Episcopal Church, and be it further
Resolved that this Special Commission be formed within 60 days following the adjournment of this 77th General Convention, and be it further
Resolved that the several dioceses hold conversations concerning the re-structuring of the Episcopal Church with the goal of better aligning missional organization and enhancing ministry at all levels of The Episcopal Church, and report the findings of these conversations to the Special Commission by no later than the end of calendar year 2013, and be it further
Resolved that the Special Commission recommend a plan for restructuring the administration and governance of The Episcopal Church to be considered at the 78th General Convention, and be it further
Resolved, that the Joint Standing Committee on Program, Budget and Finance consider adding appropriate monies to the General Convention Budget to cover the cost of this mandate.
And the one who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” -Rev. 21: 5
While February in Kentucky cannot usually be described as a time of lightness, I come to this February with sunrises and sunflowers in heart and mind — personal symbols of the light of God as all things are made new.

Dear members of the Diocese of Lexington,
We serve a God of abundance. We are called to use God’s gifts creatively and effectively. The Diocese of Lexington is blessed with many caring and committed Christians devoted to the wide diversity of God’s work. We, as an organization of believers, must plan collectively to exercise faithful stewardship over the resources God has entrusted to us. Those resources go far beyond financial resources. Indeed, our most significant resources are not financial. We do, however, need to make decisions about our finances. The Budget Committee needs your input in the process of allocating our financial resources for 2012. [Read more...]
When electing their deputations for the 2011 diocesan convention, our congregations will be choosing deputies to participate not only in the annual meeting but also the election of a new bishop. Every congregation should be aware of the important additional role the 2011 convention deputies will play, and each electing body should make sure that all who are elected deputies understand the additional work they will need to do. These duties will include attending one of the “walkabouts,” the question and answer sessions with the nominees that will precede the electing convention. The deputies will also be required to attend both conventions–the annual diocesan convention and the electing convention. The annual diocesan convention will be held Feb. 17-18, 2012 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Lexington, Kentucky. The electing convention is scheduled for August 18, 2012.
