Tornado Relief School Supply Drive

As everyone is aware of the state of Kentucky was devastated by an outbreak of tornados this past March. Members of St. Hubert’s, along with Archdeacon Bryant Kibler in conjunction with bishop Knudsen and Reading Camp are spearheading one part of our diocesan assistance. We have chosen Salyersville Grade School. This school, home to 550 kindergartens through sixth grade students is located in Magoffin County, the fifth poorest county in the United States). The storms library totally destroyed their library as well as damaging most of their classrooms. These children mostly all from low economic homes are in desperate need of school supplies for this upcoming school year, as well as donations needed to restock their library.

What we are asking for is for every church in the diocese to have a school supply drive for these children. At the moment we are focusing on grades K through 3rd. If all members through the month of June bring in to a donation box supplies for these kids and then at the end of the month have the donations brought either to the Mission House located on Martin Luther King Blvd, or to the Cathedral Domain either when you drop your children off for camp or pick them up. The donations will then be transported Salyersville.

We are asking for this to be done by the first of July if possible, so that the teachers will have an idea of an inventory of supplies.

The Diocese is also working on purchasing books for the library through donations. All Monetary donations maybe sent to the sent to the Episcopal Diocese of Lexington and designated, “Tornado relief book fund”. To donate books appropriated for elementary and middle schools libraries see the following link (www.montclair.k12.nj.us/webpagefiles/455/ar-title.pdf) or more information contact bkibler@diolex.org. Donated books can also be brought to the Mission House.

We are in need of your participation, if you have questions contact me martiemayer@aol.com. The following is a supply list from the school.

Summer at St. Agnes House

St. Agens House Summer is a beautiful time at St. Agnes House and, although our volunteers thin out a bit due to vacations, our occupancy does not. Consider spending some of your time this summer at St. Agnes House and supporting our diocesan ministry of hospitality with your time and talent!

Planning a “stay”cation at home? Spice it up with some service and volunteer as an individual or a family. Yearning to feel like your summertime matters? Choose a day and time each week to spend at St. Agnes House. St. Agnes’ House does need your time and support, but most of our volunteers find they receive much more than they can ever give as they live out God’s call to serve and to love others.

As always, sharing your treasure is appreciated as we strive to meet the lodging needs of those coming to the Lexington area for medical treatment. Just $10 covers a guest’s fee for a night stay, $70 covers a guest’s fee for a whole week! Make a donation here ( add link to donate) or mail to The Episcopal Diocese of Lexington, PO Box 610, Lexington, KY 40588-0610. Please designate St. Agnes House in the memo line.

Please keep St. Agnes’ House and our guests in your prayers and we look forward to seeing you on the front porch or patio this summer!

The Secret is Out: Capital Campaign for the Domain

Domain photo

The Capital Campaign to fund an endowment for the Cathedral Domain is in full swing.  Leaders throughout the Diocese, both clergy and lay, have made pledges and are now spreading the word and accepting pledge cards from additional donors.

The ultimate goal is to raise $5,000,000, the principal of which will be restricted. The income from the endowment will secure the Domain’s operation and allow needed improvements to the facilities. Pledges can be paid over five years. The Campaign needs:

*pledges at all levels of giving; no amount is too small.
*committed individuals who will identify and visit other potential donors.

If you would like to donate or can help, please e-mail or call Holli Powell at hpowell@diolex.org or 859-252-6527, ext. 108.

Thanks to those who have already donated and those who are making visits.

Bishop Knudsen announces Domain development consultant

Hansen brings life-long camping experience to Domain development position

Domain Development Strategist Named“I am pleased to announce that we have engaged Jane Hansen as Development Consultant for the Cathedral Domain,” says Bishop Chilton Knudsen. “Jane brings a background in retail business, marketing, management of non-profit volunteers and camping to this position, as well as an excitement about utilizing these experiences in ministry.”

“Her role is not fund-raising, (although she will refer all potential donors to our campaign for the Domain!), but promotion and publicity about the Domain as it approaches its centennial.”

“As an independent contractor, Jane will increase visibility of the Domain in the diocese, ecumenical and non-profit communities, assuring that the Domain is utilized as fully as it deserves to be. She will work closely with Canon Andy Sigmon, Director of the Cathedral Domain Camp and Conference Center, and the Camp and Conference Board.”

“I look forward to working with Jane as she spreads the message of the great work happening on this holy mountain for people of all ages throughout the region,” says Sigmon. “This is a position that the Board had identified a need for and I’m thrilled to see it finally happening, and to welcome Jane.”

Bishop Chilton Works at St. Timothy’s

This past Saturday Bishop Chilton, the Interim Assisting Bishop, joined Herb Mahan from Klote and Associates, Andy Sigmon, Bryant and Connie Kibler, and Nancy and her son Eddie (the homeowners) to continue the work begun by volunteers from the Episcopal Diocese of Western Michigan. We were able to install a new wood burning heat stove and chimney in the new addition as well new carpet. We were also able to join the new and old roofs, trim the eave and repair some drywall. While there is still a significant amount of work to do to complete the room (taping and mudding the ceiling, adding molding to the ceilings and floors, trimming out windows and doors), Eddie and his mother have a warm dry room to live in this winter.

More work will be done over the next year as well as in many other locations. St. Timothy’s had eleven weeks of schools, colleges and churches in 2011 and still had requests at six homes we never got to. We currently have eight weeks filled in 2012. There are full week opportunities throughout the year as well as weekend visits for congregations that can only spare a day or two. For more information, contact the Ven. Bryant Kibler, bkibler@diolex.org, 859-252-6527.
