There was some good natured joshing about signs …New York City closed down with hurricane threats…and a transformer fire in north Lexington knocking out the electricity at the Cathedral only minutes before the service of farewell for Bishop Sauls….but the “good goodbye” took place undaunted. Christ Church Cathedral was bathed in natural light and soft breezes as the long procession of clergy and choir processed. A grand piano, hastily rolled in from the Great Hall provided accompaniment which allowed the several hundred joined voices of diocesan volunteer choir and large congregation to fill the sanctuary. Throughout the service of the Ending of a Pastoral Relationship, passersby could be noted pausing by the open doors. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
It is one of the most wonderful times of the year in my opinion. With the coming of September, the neighborhood around our house has been bustling with students moving in and a sense of returned life and newness. [Office of Public Affairs, May 31, 2011] Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has named Bishop Stacy F. Sauls as Chief Operating Officer for the Episcopal Church.
“The Episcopal Church Center exists to support the Church in serving a diverse and changing world,” noted Presiding Bishop Jefferts Schori. “The churchwide staff has achieved new levels of excellence and innovation as the Church Center has been reorganized and some staff has been dispersed to offices in other geographic regions of the Church. This transition represents a healthy and forward-looking opportunity to build on that good work. Bishop Sauls brings a unique set of gifts to the next chapter of this ministry, particularly his distinguished service as a diocesan bishop. I am deeply grateful that he will join us in facilitating this work.” [Read more...]
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
One of my favorite hymns in our Hymnal 1982, No. 439, comes from the 1835 edition of a collection known as The Southern Harmony.

What wondrous love is this, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss
to lay aside his crown for my soul.
Its Southern roots are one of the reasons I love it. Another is the way it links God’s love with wonder, with mystery, and with choosing adventure over what is known, secure, and comfortable. It is a beautiful expression of something we know to be sometimes difficult but also profoundly true, even if we lack any word to describe it other than wondrous.
Stacy Sauls is a native of Atlanta, Georgia, where his family has lived since the 18th century, before in fact there was an Atlanta, when the rolling hill country now south of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport was the American frontier. [Read more...]
